One, Too, Twee (An Indiepop Retrospective)

Twesting, twesting, won, too, twee.

One Too Twee – An Indiepop Retrospective was apparently a bootlegged compilation from 2004. There are a few versions of this about, but I think this is the extended version.

It is a slightly controversial compilation with grebo gurus Pop will Eat Itself and the not exactly twee Jesus
and Mary Chain. Belle and Sebastian are included, should they be in a retrospective? They were formed 10 years after C86 and still going strong, could be nu-twee?

I could spend days debating why Northern Picture Library and Tullycraft were not included. Well they were trying to keep it to an 80 track compilation. A complete introduction to a fey and shambolic scene, that through C86 kick started the modern indie era. With some well-known and obscure starlets of the twee scene.

The Pastels – Thru’ Your Heart / Firebell Ringing

The spectacularly sweet Pastels single.  The is the honest heartfelt vocals by Stephen Pastel that make this single glimmer and shine. The title track weaves in a lazy melancholic way with a harmonica thrown in.  Aggi Wright has the vocal duties on Firebell Ringing, which by contrast is a more upbeat forthright song. My Heart’s My Badge and Sign Across Me are wistfully languid.  Backing vocals are provided by Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake.

At the end of the single there is Thru’ Your Heart (Home Recording).   The Pastels where not know for being heavily into studio production and their sound was lo-fi and raw.  So you can imagine how rough this home recording sounds. If you can make out the vocals, they are sung by the new recruited Katrina Mitchell who also composed the song.

The Pastels – Sittin’ Pretty

They appeared on C86 and are the embodiment of shambolic indiepop.  Sittin’ Pretty is an album that is either loved or hated.  It does not sit with the fey twee image that would surround them.  There is a rockabilly country feel to songs like Sittin’ Pretty.  There are plenty of influences at play with this album. Eugene Kelly (BMX Bandits, Captain America and Eugenius) has the vocal duties on Baby, You’re Just You and Swerve.  There is also a considerable Shop Assistants influence with Annabel “Aggi” Wright appearing on Nothing To Be Done and David Keegan on guitar duties in Swerve.

There is a refreshing garage rock appeal to the album, it owes much to the work of the Ramones and the Velvet Underground.
